The use of ASCII format for Network Interchange was described in 1969. Compared to earlier telegraph codes, the proposed Bell code and ASCII were both ordered for more convenient sorting (i.e., alphabetization) of lists and added features for devices other than teleprinters. The first edition of the standard was published in 1963, underwent a major revision during 1967, and experienced its most recent update during 1986. Work on the ASCII standard began in May 1961, with the first meeting of the American Standards Association's (ASA) (now the American National Standards Institute or ANSI) X3.2 subcommittee. Its first commercial use was as a seven- bit teleprinter code promoted by Bell data services.
